| Valentino Panciera Besarel (1829 - 1902), born in Zoldo, established himself in the 1860's in Venice where he opened his atelier and shop. He soon established his name and fame with the European bourgeoisie and royal courts. Mainly executing the most exquisite pieces of sculpture, he also made a few pieces of furniture, which was a rarity amongst his production, such as the present pair of armchairs. Amongst his main sources of inspiration was the work of Andrea Brustolon (1662 - 1732) whose work he had been frequently exposed to in Venice. The latter's dramatic compositions of twisting dragons, male muscular figures and chubby cherubs interwoven with stylised foliage and theatrical effects, would have appealed to the late 19th century taste for the extravagant and the baroque. For other chairs and console table by Besarel, see the exhibition catalogue by Massimo De Grassi, "Valentino Panciera Besarel", Verona, 2002, pp. 52 and 167 and also Giovanni Angelini, Gli Scultori Panciera Besarel, Belluno, 2002, p. 155. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
