The rose and cream serpentine marble top with canted corners over a conforming case, the frieze mounted with a wide banding of gilt bronze chandelle and acanthus over a second densely fruited band above a central door inlaid with première partie boullework, after a Berain engraving, depicting trumpeting putti and fabulous winged creatures within arabesque scrollwork flanked by canted panels headed by volute acanthus scrolls, ending in fabulous dolphin mask sabots flanked by concave glazed doors fronting pilasters mounted with scrolling foliage ending in lion's mask sabots. Information about Boulle Furniture: Decorative type of marquetry in which tortoiseshell, brass, copper and tin were cut and pierced into elaborate floral or curving designs. Originally a 10th century Italian process, Boulle marquety developed in 17th century France and was perfected by Andre-Charles Boulle (1642-1732). Many Boulle style pieces were reproduced during the reign of Napoleon III (1852-1871) utilizing the same techniques and materials as the original pieces by Boulle. |
