Notes:
This fine and charming painting, like many other similar works by Chocarne Moreau's favorite subject matter, captures the mischievous and comical acts and lives of young working-class children and embodies many of the same characteristics found in Norman Rockwell's early works. Just like Rockewell, Paul-Charles Chocarne-Moreau was able to succeed by introducing these types of unusually talked-about playful scenes into the French and Continental art markets.
Born is Dijon in 1855, Chocarne-Moreau did most of his studies in Paris, working in the atelier of Professor Tony Robert-Fleury, before seeking further instruction under William Bouguereau, both of whom later became presidents of the Société des Artistes Français, Robert-Fleury after Bouguereau.
Chocarne-Moreau became a member of the Société des Artistes Français. He exhibited in the Exposition Universelle and was awarded a bronze medal. Moreau died on May 5th, 1931 in Neuilly-sur-Seine.
