A Very Fine Pair of French Earky 19th Century Regence Style Ormolu and Patinated Bronze Figural Chenets, each with rectangular drapery-covered base surmounted by a recumbent female sphinx, on paw feet. Circa: 1820

With their lion-paw feet, lambrequinned edge, and sphinx, these chenets are inspired by Règence prototypes. Comprable chenets from circa 1700 to 1710 include those with a reclining sphinx in the Bayerisches Nationalmuseum in Munich (See H. Ottomeyer, P. Pröschel, Vergoldete Bronzen, Munich, Volume 1, Fig. 1.10.10) and three further examples with Bèrainesque masks and paw feet,
